The lineage and history of karate is important. Our club is the fourth generation of Go-Ju-Ryu. Shihan Davenport has had several conversations with some masters of Okinawa to assure our club is teaching as it should. Shihan just returned from the international karate tournament in Okinawa, August 1997. We are also researching the Christian influences in karate see page 4.

Our Lineage

  • Durma started teaching karate to Buddhist monks 500 AD
  • Mr. Gichin Funakochi started teaching karate in Japan 1917
  • Mr. Chojun Miyagi (founder of Go-Ju-Ryu 1930)
  • Mr. Eiichi Miyazato
  • Mr. Larry Pickel, brought the art to the US.
  • Mr. Larry Davenport
  • Mr. Mike Atkisson

Our Student Creed

I intend to develop myself in a positive manner, and avoid anything that would reduce my mental growth or physical health, I intend to develop selfdiscipline in order to bring out the best in myself and others, I intend to use what I learn in class constructively and defensively to help myself and my fellow man, and never to be abusive or offensive.
